Undercover Wine Tasting with a Former CIA Agent

May 18, 2026

Why This Wine Class Was Different

The goal of the night was simple. Drink, learn, and do not take ourselves too seriously. Wine should be respected, not feared. If a glass makes you smile and think at the same time, then the wine is doing its job. That was the spirit of the whole evening. Each wine gave us a different lesson. Climate. Altitude. Terroir. Balance. Patience. Structure. But because of Rosanna’s stories, those lessons did not feel academic. They felt alive.

Drink Better. Think Deeper. Laugh More.

For this event, I wanted something different from the usual tasting notes and textbook wine talk. So I brought the wines. Rosanna, a former CIA agent, brought the stories. I introduced each bottle through grape, producer, and terroir. She connected each wine to a story, a personality, and a hidden layer that matched the style in the glass.

It turned into one of the most memorable classes I have hosted.

Because wine is a lot like people. Some arrive loud. Some reveal themselves slowly. Some feel soft at first, then show real backbone. Some look polished, but there is much more going on underneath.

Wine 1: Chardonnay and First Impressions

We started with Jules Gambino Chardonnay from Napa Valley.

Chardonnay is one of the most misunderstood grapes in the world because people think they already know it. But Chardonnay changes completely depending on where it grows and how it is handled in the cellar. In Napa, the warmer climate gives it more ripeness, more texture, and a broader shape in the glass.

This was the perfect opening wine because it let us talk about one of the most important truths in wine. Place changes everything. Napa gives Chardonnay generosity, but the producer decides how much richness, creaminess, or polish to bring to the final wine.

I told the room that a rich Chardonnay without freshness is like a guy in a white suit who talks too much at dinner. Impressive for two minutes, then you need air.

Rosanna picked up the same idea in her own way. Some people walk into a room smooth and fully in control. That does not mean they are simple. It means you need to look deeper. That was our first lesson of the night. Never confuse polish with lack of depth.

Wine 2: Malbec and Reinvention

Next came Nomade Malbec from Mendoza.

Malbec was born in France, but in Argentina it became a star. Mendoza gives the grape warm sunny days and cool nights, especially because of the elevation near the Andes. That is why great Malbec from Mendoza can be rich and fresh at the same time.

In the glass, it is usually generous from the start. Plum, blackberry, black cherry, maybe violet, maybe spice. It is open, warm, and easy to like. Cabernet walks into the room like a lawyer. Malbec walks in like your cousin at Sunday lunch, already hugging everyone.

Rosanna connected this wine to reinvention. Sometimes people become their real selves only after leaving home, changing environment, and learning to adapt. Mendoza does that to Malbec. It gives the grape a new identity and a stronger voice.

Wine 3: Turkey, the Unexpected File

Then we went off map with Hanchalar from Erdel Winery in Turkey.

This was the bottle that changed the room.

Turkey has one of the oldest wine histories in the world, yet for many people it still feels unfamiliar. That is exactly why I wanted it in the lineup. When people recognize a famous label, they often arrive with opinions already formed. When they taste something new, they have to rely on their own senses.

That is when wine gets more interesting.

This wine gave us the chance to talk about terroir beyond the famous names. Soil, climate, local grapes, elevation, and producer choices matter everywhere. A less known region is not a less important region. It simply asks more from the drinker.

Rosanna gave the perfect parallel. In her world, the most obvious name gets the attention. The underestimated one often holds the real secret. The same thing happens in wine. The moment you stop chasing only famous regions, the whole experience gets better. And yes, your wallet also says grazie.

Wine 4: Bordeaux and Discipline

From there, we moved to Château des Léotins from Bordeaux.

Bordeaux is one of the great classrooms of the wine world because it teaches restraint, structure, and balance. It is not usually about one grape trying to dominate. It is about blending. Merlot brings softness. Cabernet Sauvignon brings backbone. Cabernet Franc brings lift and detail. Together, they create something more complete than they could alone.

This is what makes Bordeaux such a useful wine in a class setting. It shows that wine is not always about impact. Sometimes it is about precision.

When you taste Bordeaux, fruit is only part of the story. You also find earth, cedar, herbs, tobacco, and shape. Bordeaux does not need to shout. It knows exactly who it is.

Rosanna connected that to teamwork. The best operations do not succeed because one person steals the scene. They succeed because every part of the team understands its role. Bordeaux works the same way. Balance is not decoration. It is the mission.

Wine 5: Fiano and the Slow Reveal

Then we arrived at one of the stars of the night, Exulted by Quintodecimo, a Fiano di Avellino.

I always enjoy watching people realize that a white wine can be serious, layered, and unforgettable. Fiano is one of the great native grapes of southern Italy, and Fiano di Avellino is proof that Campania can produce whites with depth, tension, and aging potential.

What makes it special is the combination of southern generosity with inland freshness. Avellino is not coastal Campania. It has elevation and a cooler feel, which gives the wine detail and structure.

This is not a simple beach white.

This is a wine that opens slowly. Citrus, white flowers, herbs, smoke, stone fruit, hazelnut. You do not rush Fiano. You stay with it.

I told the room that Fiano is like an Italian grandmother. At first she seems calm. Five minutes later she has revealed three family secrets and corrected your posture.

Rosanna immediately connected with that. Some stories do not make sense in the first minute. Some people do not either. The most interesting ones reveal themselves only with time. That is exactly what Fiano does in the glass.

Wine 6: Brunello and Lasting Presence

We finished with Donna Artemisia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.

There was no better ending.

Brunello is made from Sangiovese, but more importantly, it is made in Montalcino. That place changes the grape. It gives it more depth, more breadth, and more structure. You taste red cherry, dried fruit, herbs, spice, earth, leather, and length. But the real signature of Brunello is not any one aroma. It is the way the wine stays with you.

Brunello is not made for speed. It needs time in aging. Time in the glass. Time in your own understanding. That patience is part of what makes it great.

I told the room to focus on the finish. Great Brunello keeps speaking after the sip. It enters like a signore and leaves like a legend.

Rosanna brought the evening full circle. The strongest presence in a room is not always the loudest one. Sometimes it is the one you still feel after the conversation ends. That is Brunello. Quiet confidence. Real impact.

What This Night Really Taught

By the end of the class, what I loved most was not just the wines themselves.

It was the shift in the room.

People stopped trying to find the correct answer. They started paying attention. They started listening to texture, freshness, structure, and tension. They laughed more. They relaxed more. They trusted their own palate more.

That is when a wine class works.

Not when people leave with a page full of notes, but when they leave with one dangerous idea in their head.

The more you know about wine, the more fun it becomes.

Final Thoughts

This undercover tasting reminded me why I love teaching wine.

A bottle is never just a bottle. It is place. It is people. It is climate. It is patience. It is style. And sometimes, when the night is built the right way, it is also story, surprise, and a little bit of theater.

That evening, we traveled from Napa to Mendoza, from Turkey to Bordeaux, from Campania to Montalcino. We talked about grape character, terroir, altitude, blending, and aging. But most of all, we made wine personal.

And that is always the goal.

Not just to pour a glass.

To give it meaning.
